IMAGES THAT SPEAK: PERSONAL WRITING FROM VISUAL MEDIA (Rising 8th-10th Graders)

Participants in this week-long workshop will utilize visual texts like film, television shows, and photographs to inspire and guide personal narratives. Writers will work in a collaborative environment where they will be encouraged to share their writing with their peers. Instructors will provide exemplary models, creative writing prompts, and individualized feedback so each participant can craft a powerful memoir that features their unique voice. The workshop will culminate with a gallery-style showcase of each participant's polished writing.

Instructor: Julie Demers teaches English and theatre at Hudson Valley Community College, holds a degree in 7-12 English education, and has experience teaching at academic summer camps. She believes that each writer has a unique voice and can produce stories that only they can tell! She enjoys interactive classes where students can be free to express themselves and receive encouraging feedback in a collaborative setting.

Instructor: Tim Jeffreys has taught middle school, high school, and college-level English/Composition in Massachusetts and New York. He believes that watching students gain confidence throughout the writing process, whether it be for developing a story or an argument, is his favorite part of his job. Tim currently teaches at Niskayuna High School.

This workshop will run July 13-17, 9am-12pm, at the University at Albany. Space is limited! Please register by June 1, 2026.
