A Call to Adventure: Writing Heroes and Their Journeys! (Rising 5th-7th Graders)

A CALL TO ADVENTURE: WRITING HEROES AND THEIR JOURNEYS (Rising 5th-7th Graders)

What makes a hero? Explore heroes from myths to modern legends, or through your own memory or imagination. Students will develop their own heroes, design epic journeys, and learn the basics of storytelling and character development in this fun, interactive writing adventure.

Instructor: Julie Demers teaches English and theatre at Hudson Valley Community College, holds a degree in 7-12 English education, and has experience teaching at academic summer camps. She believes that each writer has a unique voice and can produce stories that only they can tell! She enjoys interactive classes where students can be free to express themselves and receive encouraging feedback in a collaborative setting.

Instructor: Devin Egan has spent most of her career teaching various English courses to high school freshmen. Her love of writing dates back as far as she can remember; however, she credits her third grade teacher with fostering this passion through expansive writing workshop time and a belief in her potential to write to change the world. Devin believes the best writing comes from playfulness and risk-taking, and she strives to create this environment alongside her students in the classroom.

This workshop will run July 7-11, 9am-12pm, at the University at Albany. Space is limited! Please register by June 1, 2025.
